SUSAN
KAEFER, R. P.T.
Susan
is a graduate of U.S.C. and has been a physical therapist for 40 years. She has
worked in association with Dr. Kaslow for over 10 years. Her specialty and post
graduate training are in the field of manual therapy treatments including
Myofascial Release, Visceral Manipulation, Cranio-Sacral
therapy and Acupressure. These treatments are all gentle and non-invasive with
no side effects and few contraindications.
Some
of the more powerful techniques Susan employs are:
§
Frequency Specific Microcurrent (FSM) is an extremely effective and gentle
treatment (see the full description of FSM elsewhere on our website). Patients experience a significant relief from
pain and resolution of most symptoms more quickly and completely with FSM when
used with the other therapies.
§
Our
Class IV Laser 980nm is a
FDA-cleared, therapeutic laser with up to 7,500 mW. Cells and tissues that are inflammed, swollen or otherwise injured have been shown to
have a significantly higher response to laser therapy irradiation than normal
healthy structures. Tina Karu,
PhD, of the Laser Technology Center
in Russia and affiliated
with UC Berkeley,
has researched the effects of light on the cell since the 1980s. She found there are photoreceptors at the
molecular level that, when triggered, activate a number of biological reactions
such as DNA/RNA synthesis, increased cAMP levels,
protein and collagen synthesis and cellular proliferation. The
result is rapid regeneration, normalization and healing of damaged cellular
tissue. Thus, light is a trigger for the rearrangement
of cellular metabolism.

More
recently we have been using MORA Light
Therapy with some rather dramatic results.
It is too early to conclude how and where this fits into our physical
therapy choices, but for now we are very encouraged.
Susan
creates a safe, comforting environment during her hour-long treatments that
invites patients to rest and allows healing to occur. While
using her skills to treat her patient’s pain and dysfunction, she also
encourages her patients to discover the factors in their daily life that may be
causing or perpetuating their problem. There is extensive instruction in what
to do at home or on the job to care for themselves and
remain pain-free.
It
has always been important to Susan that her patients feel listened to and be
treated with enough time and attention that they are able to recover in the
shortest time possible. They leave with a new understanding of how they
developed their painful condition and the tools to keep themselves well. Susan stays in close communication with Dr.
Kaslow on daily basis. She is available
for telephone consultation to ascertain the appropriate care for your
condition. You may also refer patients
that are not patient's of Dr. Kaslow’s to Susan for treatment.
Physical
Therapy provided in our office is covered in part by most insurance companies
but review your policy and determine the extent of your coverage before
starting treatment. It is also possible to see Susan on a discounted cash
basis.
